Medical Oncology

Each of the nine medical oncologists in the Hematology Oncology, PC practice at the Bennett Cancer Center has extensive training, experience and advanced certifications in Hematology (blood), Oncology (cancer) and Internal Medicine. In addition, they hold certifications as Fellows in the American Academy of Physicians (F.A.C.P.) and as Diplomats in the American Board of Internal Medicine (D.A.B.I.M.), and are all on the faculty of Columbia University.

Chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy and peripheral stem-cell transplants are administered in the outpatient setting. Patients receive these treatments in private suites decorated to make patients feel like they are more at home than in an institutional setting. There is also a group treatment room where individuals can receive their treatment in the company of others. The oncology clinical research office is located within Hematology Oncology, P.C. This proximity allows the oncologists an environment for greater awareness of current research, as well as providing patients the most current, cutting-edge treatment options. A team of volunteers provides conversation, snacks or just a warm smile to help our patients feel more at ease during their visits.

For more information about Hematology Oncology, P.C., please call 203-325-2695.

The Radiation Oncology Department is equipped with state-of-the-art simulator and linear accelerator machines, including dynamic multileaf collimation for the delivery of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Conventional and three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy treatments are also administered as appropriate. Brachytherapy (radioactive seed implantation) is available for prostate cancer and cervical cancer.

The Bennett Cancer Center is the only area hospital to receive accreditation by the American College of Surgeons as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program.

The multidisciplinary team includes radiation therapists, physicists and a medical dosimetrist. Patients benefit from an approach that combines a high level of technical expertise with care that is tailored to individual needs at each step, from the initial consultation through the treatment planning process and treatment delivery in a caring and supportive setting.

Inpatient Services

The Oncology Unit at Stamford Hospital, Main 3 North, consists of a team of caring and dedicated professionals with a high level of expertise in the care of oncology patients. Our nurses are educated specifically in oncology nursing and are certified in the administration of chemotherapy. An oncology nurse practitioner is on staff for the unit.

The concern and care for the patient with cancer are evident in the day-to-day operations on the unit. Staff members on Main 3 North have frequently been recognized by a high level of patient satisfaction; and patients and families often express their gratitude and appreciation for the care they or their loved ones have received while in the Oncology Unit.

Patients and their families often develop relationships with the staff as they help them through their cancer journey.

Patients who require stem-cell reinfusion as part of their treatment for cancer are cared for in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. This specialized type of care consists of intensive bedside nursing by specially trained nurses. In addition, the Oncology Unit maintains close relationships with the Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice, and other community organizations to provide support to patients after discharge. Cancer Genetics

Our Cancer Genetics Program is staffed with a full-time genetics counselor and dedicated physicians. This service is available for people who have a family history, or believe they have a family history, that predisposes them to developing cancer. Several types of hereditary cancer syndromes have been identified, including breast, ovarian, uterine, colon, prostate, melanoma and some endocrine cancers. Together, the genetics counselor and medical oncologist evaluate a person's risks and develop a plan of cancer surveillance and prevention strategies based on this genetic and medical information.

Overall, the Cancer Genetics Program emphasizes early detection and identifies individuals whose family history puts them at greater risk for cancer.

Our High Risk Breast Cancer Prevention Program brings together expert physicians focused on research and screening of women at especially high risk, and the technology to identify abnormal cells still in the precancerous stages.

The Cancer Genetics Program is currently developing the first high-risk colorectal cancer registry in Connecticut. The registry will collect data from individuals with a high risk of developing colorectal cancer and other related cancers, which will be used to provide the relevant screening, education, genetic counseling and appropriate genetic testing for individuals and their families.

For more information about the Cancer Genetics Program, please call 203-276-7693.
