Educational Opportunities
At Stamford Hospital, education never ends. Our clinical instructors, enterostomal therapists, pain specialists, infection control nurses and clinical nurse specialists provide our staff nurses with orientation, in-service training programs and continuing education on a one to one basis both formally and informally.
Professional Development Opportunities
Orientation
Competency-based with a minimum of 8 weeks orientation for new RN grads and varying orientation lengths for experienced RNs based on competency completion
Summer Extern Program
Allows nursing students to work in clinical areas to experience all patient care activities
Kaplan Review Courses
On-site help to prepare new grads for NCLEX exams
Certification Offerings
Annual on-site offerings, including CPR, PALS, NALS and Critical Care courses
Healthstream
Computer-based modules are available year round
Accelerated Program for Nursing Students
The Stamford Hospital Foundation offers nursing students an opportunity to work part time and receive full time benefits and pay.
RN Emergency Department Fellowship Program
A 19-week program providing nurses with an intensive introduction to ED nursing, exposing him or her to all aspects of caring for the emergent and urgent patient. The training is composed of several modules.
Oncology Core Curriculum
An intense two day program for nurses interested in learning more about the various forms of cancer and the new methods of treatment.
Career Tracks
Growth opportunities are established, such as the hospital's "Echo" program involving Cardiology, Intermediate Care and Intensive Care.
Tuition Reimbursement
Stamford Hospital will reimburse students for approved courses in advanced degrees programs at either 80% of their tuition or $200 per credit hour whichever is greater.
Annual Scholarships
Awarded by the Nursing Department for those employees who wish to obtain their RN degree or seek an advanced degree in Nursing.
Clinical Affiliations
Stamford Hospital maintains affiliations with the baccalaureate nursing and graduate programs at Columbia University, Fairfield University and Pace University along with the baccalaureate programs at Sacred Heart University, the Nurse Practitioner program at Yale University and the Associate degree program at Norwalk Community College.
Nursing Grand Rounds
Presentations are held monthly and topics are generated through needs assessments, general interests and requests by nursing staff. Any interested nurses are encouraged to present and to attend Nursing Grand Rounds. Utilization of nursing theory and evidence-based research is demonstrated through the presentation of challenging patient care scenarios for the continuing education of all Nursing staff. The informal "lunch and learn" format provides opportunities for questions and networking with colleagues, with continuing education credits awarded for attendance.
Shared Governance
Shared Governance has fostered the creation of unit-based nursing practice councils as well as various department wide councils. The roles of these councils is to develop research-based best practice. Our Shared Governance Councils are important tools allowing nursing staff at all levels to provide value contributions to our organization.
