Residents also do a required rotation in neurology at Columbia University Medical Center, an institution that is world renowned for pioneering work and expertise in neurology.
Ambulatory Setting & Training
Our internal medicine residents receive their ambulatory education at Optimus Health Care, a federally qualified health center which receives funding from the federal government to provide health care services to the underserved and uninsured. Our residents learn to care for a culturally and socio-economically diverse patient population, seeing patients from the Caribbean, Central and South America, Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. Learning to care for and communicate effectively with patients and their families to maximize the patient's medical and social well being is done routinely. Residents also participate in ambulatory quality improvement projects to ensure that by the end of their training they are expert in the principles of primary care prevention and the practice of evidence based medicine. Residents also receive sub-specialty ambulatory training in endocrinology, dermatology, cardiology, rheumatology, infectious disease and HIV primary care, gastroenterology, gynecology, and pulmonary medicine, as well as receive exposure to allergy/immunology, sleep medicine, rehabilitation medicine and ENT.
