A Note From Dr. Maria Maldonado

Greetings!

Thank you for your interest in the Stamford Hospital's Residency Program in Internal Medicine.Maria Madonado I'm delighted to share my excitement and enthusiasm at the fact that our residency program is run at Stamford Hospital, an institution in which our mission and values perfectly correlate with the goals of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for residency education which are to enhance the safety and quality of patient care in teaching hospitals, meet the educational needs of residents, and ensure that the future of patient safety and quality be met when these residents enter independent practice.

The Stamford Hospital's Residency Program in Internal Medicine is a relatively small program.  We have 20 residents, 6 categorical residents in each year, and 2 preliminary residents in the first year affording us the unique opportunity of tailoring an educational prescription for all of our residents, and ensuring that each resident learn to maximize their strengths, and work on those areas he or she needs improvement on. We have a meaningful Faculty Advising Program that has resulted scholarly activity for most of our residents; in fact all of our residents are required to engage in a research project.  In addition, those residents who desire fellowship programs are successful because of the professional mentoring that occurs as a result of this program.  Our Intensive Care Unit is nationally renowned and the Director of our ICU, Dr. James Krinsley administrates a superb program which provides our residents with a comfort level comparable to that of fellow in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine upon graduation. Moreover, we are a community based, university affiliated residency program that enjoys a meaningful relationship with Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.  The majority of the third year medical school class rotates through Stamford Hospital, and residents who match here will have plenty of opportunities to hone their skills as teacher.  In addition, our residents have a required rotation in neurology at New York Presbyterian Hospital/College of Physicians and Surgeons, a discipline that they are world renowned for.

Stamford Hospital offers an ideal environment for an education in internal medicine that has ensured that residents upon graduation are able to identify systems errors and devise and implement systems that positively impact on patient safety and quality, and our residents are well prepared to meet the challenges of practicing medicine in today's environment.  The patient population is economically, culturally, and clinically diverse, offering an extraordinary experience in learning to deliver patient care.  Stamford Hospital is a member of the Planetree Alliance which fosters and champions patient-centered care, and meets its mission of providing a broad range of high quality health and wellness services focused on the needs of our community in outstanding fashion.  The institution places strong emphasis on quality, patient satisfaction and on patient safety, and is extremely responsive to our residents' concerns and needs.  Finally, Stamford, CT is a vibrant community offering something for everyone, and has been ranked as one of the best places to live in America because of its diversity, economic opportunity, and safety record.

I invite you to tour the rest of website, and to submit an application through ERAS, and wish you the best of luck as you navigate the process of applying to residency.

Maria Maldonado, MD
