Family Medicine Residency FAQs
Does your hospital have other residency programs?
The Stamford Hospital prides itself as one of the region's finest teaching institutions. Part of its success is due to the multiple residencies that work in a cooperative effort to provide the best patient care possible. In addition to Family Practice, we have Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Surgery, and Psychiatry. We are the second largest residency in the hospital.
How stable is the program?
Our program has been successfully training Family Physicians in Stamford for over 25 years. Dr. Joseph V. Connelly has been Program Director for the past 15 years. We have been affiliated with the Stamford Hospital and Columbia University for six years.
What type of patient mix do you treat?
Although a small city, Stamford has a population distribution similar to the larger cities in the tri-state area. This provides diverse ethnic, economic, demographic, and social inpatient and outpatient populations. We feel strongly that we have a mission to the underserved patients in Stamford. Most patients in the Family Medicine Center are from the middle and lower income economic classes.
What are your academic affiliations?
Our academic affiliation is with Columbia University. However, we welcome students from many of the surrounding academic institutions including UCONN (University of Connecticut), NY Medical College, and Albany Medical College.
What do your graduates go on to do after graduation?
Our graduates go on to work in many different areas of medicine. Most of them have gone on to work on private practices in urban, suburban, and rural areas primarily in the North east, but throughout the country. Some work in Urgent Care Centers as well as staffing Emergency Rooms in both rural and urban hospitals. Others have traveled throughout the country and some even internationally. Our comprehensive program provides our residents with the skills and flexibility to work in a variety of practice settings after graduation.
Stamford? Isn't that in California?
Stamford is a highly rated community located in the southwest part of Connecticut. We are approximately 45 minutes from New York City, 2 ½ hours from Boston, and 2 ½ hours from Philadelphia.
What makes you unique?
We have a modern Family Medicine Center in a new state of the art ambulatory care building that includes a wonderful full fitness facility. Our hospital provides a terrific place to learn inpatient care and take care of our patients. The area is a fabulous place to live and work. We have a unique and progressive curriculum that prepares our residents very well for a career in family practice. The quality of life for our residents, both while working and way from work is very high. As important as our facilities, educational experience and location are; our residents historically rate the camaraderie, relationships, and work environment as among the most positive aspects of residency in Stamford.
Will I get a good education?
We provide all the tools, teachers, and resources that are necessary for an outstanding education and foundation in Family Medicine.
Who teaches your residents?
Our residents are taught all aspects of medicine by our full time Family Practice faculty and community Family Practice attendings. In addition, they have the opportunity to work closely with very high quality hospital and community specialists as well as clinical instructors from Columbia and Yale.
Are your residents happy?
We regularly solicit and highly value the feedback we receive from residents. This is a resident-oriented program that places great importance on the satisfaction of the residents. We hope you will consider coming to visit so you can ask the residents yourself
