Evaluations
The program measures outcomes of resident performance on all of the ACGME core competencies in a way that speaks to the national mandate that we prepare our physicians to meet the challenge of practicing patient-centered medicine with firm grounding in the principles of patient safety and quality, evidence based medicine, and cost-containment.
The Clinical Competence Committee, charged with these goals, consists of core and key clinical faculty and the leadership of the program. The Committee meets on a monthly basis to foster faculty development, discuss relevant changes in ACGME policy, and medical education, track resident performance, program curriculum, objectives and goals, and address program improvement. The program utilizes multiple modalities to objectively measure resident performance.
Hospitalist Teaching Rounds
Hospitalists at Stamford Hospital have been involved in residency education for over a decade, and in November of 2009, we transitioned to a fully integrated hospitalist teaching service, which is overseen by the Assistant Program Director of Inpatient Teaching, Dr. Maher Madhoun, ensuring that our residents have full and meaningful access to the physician who is responsible for the majority of the patients on the teaching service.
Appropriate and adequate supervision for residents is critical for residency education. In a 2009 survey of program directors of internal medicine, it was noted that only 52% of residency programs utilize hospitalists/nocturnists for night time supervision of residents. Our program has been ahead of the curve when it comes to ensuring meaningful in-house supervision of our residents, and there are always hospitalist attendings in-house 24 hours, 7 days a week.
