Frequently Asked Questions

1.) Am I guaranteed a full time RN position if I am accepted into the GEMS orientation program?

As long as your job performance throughout the GEMS 12-week orientation holds true to Stamford Hospital's standards and values, you are guaranteed a full time RN position within our organization.

2.) Is the GEMS orientation program competitive?

Our GEMS program is highly competitive. For our February cycle, we received over 100 resumes for only eleven positions.

3.) How many positions will you be offering for your August 2012 GEMS cycle?

The number of positions for each GEMS cycle is based on current and projected staffing needs at the time of GEMS recruitment. For August 2012, we should have a better idea of our official position number at the end of March 2012.

4.) I am a newly graduated RN and I have begun to work as a nurse elsewhere (nursing home, other hospital, physician's office, etc.). Am I still eligible to apply for GEMS?

To be eligible for our GEMS program, you would have to have less than one year of experience as a nurse. As long as you have not been working for more than one year, you remain eligible.

5.) What will my schedule be during the 12-week GEMS orientation? Will I be working full time? Do I get paid for this orientation?

You are considered a full time, paid employee from the very start of GEMS. Your schedule will vary throughout the 12 weeks, but you will be working full time hours. The first two weeks is classroom orientation (Monday through Friday) for everyone. After that, each new graduate begins rotating through units. On each unit, you are paired with a preceptor (RN), whose individual schedule you will follow.
