Stroke is a cardiovascular medical emergency similar to a heart attack, but located in the brain. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted. Stroke is an emergency and should be treated as such—call 911 or seek other immediate medical help, even if you aren't certain that is what happened.

With stroke, time lost means brain loss -- the sooner treatment is started, the greater the chance for recovery. Stamford Hospital's Stroke Center, part of our emergency department, provides swift diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. Our skilled physicians and nurses are highly trained in the performance of a strict protocol. Stroke patients who come to Stamford Hospital's emergency department go immediately to our specialized facilities for cardiac emergencies and trauma, where they receive fast, comprehensive treatment.

Patients with stroke remain in the emergency department until their condition is stabilized and are then admitted as in-patients, where Stamford Hospital's neurologists supervise treatment. Upon discharge, patients will continue to work with our physicians as part of the Outpatient Rehabilitation Department at Tully Health Center, where they will receive ongoing physical and occupational therapy.
