Frequently Asked Questions about our Pediatric Specialists
What does the term "Pediatric Specialist" mean?
Pediatric specialists have completed several years of additional medical training focused on caring for infants, children and adolescents. A non-surgical pediatric specialist, such as a cardiologist or neurologist, completes college, medical school, three years of training in pediatrics, plus an additional three years of training in his/her specialty. A pediatric surgeon completes college, medical school, and five years of training in general surgery, followed by an additional two years in pediatric surgery.
Should I be concerned because my child has been referred to a pediatric specialist?
Not necessarily. There are many reasons your child's doctor might refer you to a specialist—ranging from simple, perhaps a vision check or allergy evaluation, to other more serious conditions. Remember that an early step in diagnosing complicated medical problems is to "rule out" the most serious possibilities, and specialists are often the ones who can do this best. Your child's doctor will explain the reason for the consultation, and plans for what happens next.
Will the specialist take over my child's medical care completely?
No. Your child's doctor will continue to be the primary care provider, working collaboratively with any specialists you choose. Most often patients come to see specialists with a direct referral from their primary care doctor, although a physician referral is not required (unless by your insurance company).
How can these doctors work for both Columbia (or another major medical center) and Stamford Hospital?
Most of our pediatric specialists divide their time between our office and at least one other hospital, usually one with an affiliated medical school. These doctors will see patients who live in our area at the Tully Health Center office, and will also continue to see patients at another location, as well as to teach medical students and conduct their own research. Because they have access to the highest level of expertise and technology, your child's specialist may advise bringing him or her to another location for a particular test or surgical procedure (such as heart surgery, which is not currently performed on pediatric patients at Stamford Hospital). Thus, our patients have access to the most advanced technology, while still being able to have most of their doctor visits in the more convenient local setting.
Will my insurance cover these physicians?
Our pediatric specialists individually determine which insurance plans they accept, so there is no single answer to this question. It's a good idea to ask your child's doctor for a referral, in case your insurance company requires one or covers referred consultations differently. When you call to make your appointment, ask whether your insurance coverage is accepted.
Do I need a referral from my child's doctor?
We don't require patients to have a referral from their child's doctor, but your insurance company may require one in order to reimburse you for the visit. Please check with your insurance carrier prior to making your appointment.
