Diagnostic and Imaging Services

The Women's Breast Center offers women in our area the most advanced technology to provide the most accurate screening and diagnosis. We consider our investment in technology an investment in the health of the women we serve. In fact, we offer the strength of 3-D mammography and are the only comprehensive breast center in the region to offer this groundbreaking technology to all screening mammogram patients. This allows for better detection, fewer false positives and same day results. A recent study found that 3-D mammography in combination with 2-D mammography results in a 40% increase in the detection of invasive breast cancer and 15% fewer false positives. Diagnostic and Imaging Service Offerings

  • Digital Mammography: A digital mammogram is faster and uses less radiation than a standard film mammogram. The images are seen on a high-resolution monitor, which allows the radiologist to see in greater detail. Our digital mammography is capable of imaging large-breasted women.

  • Women who undergo routine mammograms at Stamford Hospital's Women's Breast Center now have access to a new screening tool in the fight against breast cancer. The Center is the first in Fairfield County and among the first in the U.S. to offer 3D breast tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening. Breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is a revolutionary technology that gives radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. This new technology is especially valuable in screening patients with dense breast tissue.

  • Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD): Our radiologists use CAD to second-read mammograms. The technologist uses a computer to scan mammograms for abnormalities. According to recent research, this technique, when used with screening ultrasound, may improve early detection of breast cancer.

  • Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Our MRI has the highest resolution images available in Fairfield County. Breast MRI can detect breast cancers that are not visible with other technologies. Patients who are considered high risk, including those who have been previously diagnosed with breast cancer, may benefit from a breast MRI.

  • Screening and Diagnostic Ultrasound: Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to record images on a special screen. Ultrasound is often used in conjunction with the mammogram for diagnostic exams. Screening ultrasound is often recommended for patients with very dense breast tissue.

  • Stereotactic Core Needle Biopsy: Performed by one of our experienced radiologists, this exam is done using mammography as a guide. Using digital technology, the area of concern is located and biopsied with a Mammotome® vacuum-assisted needle. This allows for an accurate diagnosis using minimally invasive technology.

  • Bone densitometry: This osteoporosis screening can be scheduled at the same time as a mammogram for the patient’s convenience.
