Teaching our children how to lead healthy lives is one of our greatest responsibilities as a community. Kids' Fitness and Nutrition Services (KIDS' FANS) is a community wide collaborative program, sponsored by Stamford Hospital, designed to promote smart eating, physical activity and a healthy weight among our children. KIDS' FANS programs endorse and promote the preventive health message of 5-2-1-0: For each day, 5 fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity, and 0 to almost no sugar-sweetened beverages.
By partnering with the City of Stamford and local community organizations, the KIDS' FANS program promotes the message of 5-2-1-0 to parents and children. In addition to our Wellness Program at the Tully Health Center we also sponsor numerous outreach efforts including fitness and nutrition classes at schools and community centers and professional and parent education classes, community engagement, improved menus in restaurants and school and community gardening. Under the direction of Program Director Madhu Mathur, MD, MPH Stamford Hospital's KIDS' FANS has organized a city-wide childhood obesity task force, leading the community in seeking and bringing solutions to address this health epidemic among our children.
